Our Mission
For our Global Communities senior project, we decided to address the issue of energy efficiency because it is a current and present issue all over the world and it is something that is in the hands of every global citizen, from the scientists of high-tech facilities to impoverished laborers in developing countries to students in Newton, Massachusetts. We addressed the issue in several ways:
First, we made a website that would inform the population of Newton South about the number of kilowatts that are used by the school. Through having this information, we hope that the students and faculty of Newton South will be more conscious of energy use and try to decrease the number of watts wasted. To achieve this, we collected data for the number of kilowatts used each month this year as well as the last four years. This should help increase awareness of our energy usage. Furthermore, we have created a list of ideas for being more energy efficient that are easy and achievable to show that being green is within reach for everyone. In addition, we have posted links to agencies both governmental and nongovernmental that address environmental issues to help students who care about the environment find a way to pitch in.
Second, we raised money to buy power strips for classrooms at Newton South. These 6-outlet strips are easily turned on and off, so that appliances can stay plugged in without draining electricity when they are not in use. Otherwise, not only computers, but projectors and speakers (and other appliances that are not used as often) stay on all day and often overnight, wasting significant amounts of electricity. Having these in classrooms will help teachers conserve energy.
Third, we have raised awareness and will continue to do so by having a presence in our community. We made a presentation in which we discussed the trials and triumphs of our efforts, what we learned from people and cultures around the world, and the results of our research. We have distributed bookmarks and flyers around the school to make easy tips for efficiency at home available to everyone. And we will continue to advocate for our cause, as well as urge others to do so, as we go our separate ways after we graduate.
